Despite having a new plexiglass barrier between our desk staff and students, we did everything we could to bring our heart of service to the students and maintain some ‘normalcy’ by decorating for Christmas. We had a visual map of where all the study stations were and a giant STOP sign at the entrance (not pictured) that asked students to come to the desk and sign up for a spot before heading that direction. We had them first come first serve and were very careful to clean them after each student left. We were only serving our current students during the semester, though occasionally offered curbside pickup to our community borrowers. In many ways the plastic barrier is a visual representation of the separation we felt from our patrons at the time. It was nearly invisible and see-through, but we all held back from one another in very tangible ways. Some connection was lost. Was this going to be forever?
